Dune Sardaukar Laser Gun (1984)

The 1984 LJN Dune Sardaukar Laser Gun is a rare, life-sized electronic roleplay toy and the villain-side counterpart to LJN’s Fremen Tarpel Gun. Designed to let children recreate battles between the Emperor’s Sardaukar troops and the Fremen of Arrakis, it is one of the more unusual pieces from LJN’s original Dune toy line.

Inspired by the futuristic weapons in David Lynch’s 1984 Dune, the Sardaukar Laser Gun features a dark gray and black militaristic design resembling an Imperial sidearm. Its battery-powered electronics include a working trigger that produces a high-pitched science-fiction sound while a light at the barrel flashes to simulate firing.

In Dune lore, these weapons are known as lasguns, although the film and toy simplify their dangerous fictional properties for play value. LJN marketed the Sardaukar Laser Gun as the direct counterpart to the Fremen Tarpel Gun, with dramatic packaging featuring a fully equipped Sardaukar soldier.

Today, the vintage 1984 LJN Dune Sardaukar Laser Gun is highly collectible, particularly when complete and functional. Surviving examples can be difficult to find in good condition because these electronic roleplay toys were designed for active play and are now more than 40 years old.
