Dune Fremen Tarpel Gun (1984)

The 1984 LJN Dune Fremen Tarpel Gun is a unique collectible from the original Dune toy line because it is not an action figure, but a battery-operated electronic roleplay toy designed to let children pretend to be Fremen warriors on Arrakis.

The child-sized futuristic pistol features electronic lights and sounds. Pulling the trigger produces a high-pitched laser sound while lights flash at the end of the barrel to simulate firing. LJN also released a Sardaukar Laser Gun as its opposing weapon, allowing children to recreate battles between the Fremen and Sardaukar.

The Tarpel Gun is particularly interesting to Dune prop collectors because its inexpensive plastic design is reportedly surprisingly close to the screen-used Fremen prop weapons seen in the 1984 film. Today, the vintage LJN Fremen Tarpel Gun is sought after as an unusual piece of Dune merchandise and an example of the toy line’s attempt to turn the film’s futuristic weapons into interactive children's toys.
