Bravestarr Colonel Borobot (1986)

The 1986 Mattel Colonel Borobot action figure is one of the most unusual and historically interesting toys from the vintage BraveStarr line. Unlike most BraveStarr characters developed through Filmation, Colonel Borobot was created entirely by Mattel, reportedly as an effort to compete with the popularity of Hasbro's Transformers.

Designed as a futuristic military robot with a 19th-century American cavalry aesthetic, Colonel Borobot features a metallic blue Union-style uniform and an innovative four-step transformation. His 8-inch robot body converts into a tracked scooter/quad vehicle by folding his arms, lowering his shoulder cannons, and positioning his head between his legs. The gimmick is memorable for one unusual flaw: his face remains visible while in vehicle mode.

The figure includes a translucent yellow Laser-Sabre, futuristic cavalry bugle, translucent purple Kerium Nugget, sticker sheet, and instruction manual. Its combination of BraveStarr Western themes, military styling, and Transformers-inspired transforming action makes the 1986 Colonel Borobot a distinctive and collectible vintage Mattel figure.
