Gears is a classic 1984 Transformers G1 Autobot Mini Vehicle that transforms into a compact red-and-blue pickup truck. Part of the first wave of The Transformers Mini Vehicles, the G1 Gears toy was initially packaged in vehicle mode in 1984 and switched to robot-mode packaging in 1985. The 1985 release also replaced the hood Autobot insignia with a heat-activated rubsign and included a yellow Mini-Spy figure.
The Gears toy is based on a Takara Micro Change mold originally released in 1983 as the “Micro Robot 04 4WD Off-Road.” Gears was unusual because he was never released as part of Takara’s original Japanese retail Transformers line. The mold was later reused for characters including Small Foot and Malignus Pick-Up and was retooled for Swerve, making Gears an important early Generation 1 mold with several later uses.
