The Black Hole Laserscope Fighter Vehicle (1979)

The 1979 Mego The Black Hole Laserscope Fighter is one of the most unusual entries in the vintage toy line because the vehicle never appeared in the film. Mego reused the existing Laserscope Fighter mold from the 1979 Buck Rogers in the 25th Century toy line, replacing the original decals with The Black Hole graphics. A planned Palomino vehicle never reached production, making this recycled fighter the only officially released Black Hole vehicle.

The Black Hole version was cancelled for the U.S. market after the film’s poor domestic performance and was instead released through GiG in Italy in 1980. The Italian release was packaged as a set with a 3.75-inch Captain Dan Holland figure, making complete boxed examples particularly desirable to collectors.

The Laserscope Fighter is especially notable for its advanced optical targeting gimmick. A rear-mounted viewfinder lets children aim at objects in the room, while the electronic controls activate a red targeting light, sound effects, and an internal optical effect that makes the targeted object appear to explode. The vehicle also features dual handles, an opening cockpit for a 3.75-inch figure, removable nose cone, and retractable landing gear.
