The Black Hole Maximillian (1979)

The 1979 Mego Maximilian is the iconic red villain robot from Disney’s The Black Hole and one of the most recognizable figures from Mego’s vintage movie toy line. Released in the popular 3.75-inch scale, Maximilian captured the movie character’s distinctive legless, mechanical design with a relatively simple articulation scheme that included a rotating head, movable arms, and pivoting stabilizer wings.

A standout feature is Maximilian’s chrome-plated claw arms, which give the figure its menacing appearance. Because Mego used different colored plastics beneath the chrome, worn examples can reveal unexpected colors where the plating has rubbed away. The tapered lower body prevents the figure from standing independently, so the 3.75-inch Maximilian was packaged with a clear or black display stand.

Unlike some of the rarer Wave 2 figures from Mego’s The Black Hole line, the 3.75-inch Maximilian was widely distributed and remains relatively easy to find. However, examples with intact chrome, undamaged stabilizer wings, and the original stand are more desirable to collectors. As the movie’s signature evil robot, Mego Maximilian remains a key vintage Disney The Black Hole collectible.
