Transformers Generation 1 Astrotrain (1985)

The 1985 Transformers G1 Astrotrain is a classic Decepticon Triple Changer that transforms into a JNR Class D51-style steam locomotive and a Space Shuttle orbiter. As one of the earliest Transformers Triple Changers, Astrotrain features unusually advanced ball-jointed shoulders and a large “Ionic Displacer Rifle.” His train mode can roll on toy train tracks, while his shuttle mode gives him his distinctive spacefaring appearance.

The original 1985 Takara Astrotrain is particularly notable to collectors for its black-and-white color scheme and unique decals, including NASA and “UNITED STATES” markings. Early Hasbro catalog prototypes also differed significantly from the final figure, featuring a gray-and-purple color scheme, alternate head and feet designs, and extending arms. These prototype and regional variations make G1 Astrotrain an especially interesting vintage Transformers collectible.
