Why We Collect: The Psychology Behind Vintage Toy Nostalgia

For many decades, people have gotten into collecting toys. However, in more recent years, we have seen this sky rocket. Millions of people around the world collect toys and this number only continues to grow as more and more people dive into the world of vintage toys.

There are many reasons why people begin buying and selling vintage toys to make their own collections. They desire to own the toys from their childhoods and get great nostalgia from them. Collectors also find comfort and control in toy collecting.

They experience the "thrill of the hunt" and personalizing their collections to become a reflection of their personality. Vintage toys are seen as a piece of history and culture as well as a hobby. Through collecting, people can gain a sense of community and learn to invest in high valued items that will last years.

Follow along with us throughout our blog on the psychology behind vintage toys and why people collect them. We will dive into each of these factors to explain the world of vintage toy collecting and why it has vastly expanded over the years.

Nostalgia and Emotional Connection

The first thing we will mention is the factor of nostalgia and the emotional connection tied to toys. Typically, the toys adults remember from when they were 5-12 years old are the ones that hold the most nostalgia. They get to reconnect with a simple and joyful time of life as they remember their childhood days and the memories associated with fun imaginitive toys.

People start collecting toys to see the ones they played with growing up. They also often collect items they wish they owned as a child but couldn’t or ones they played with at a friends house but didn’t own themselves. These people often begin collecting to see these toys again and, once they own an item, they get great joy from it and continue searching for more to grow into a collection.

Collectors often see owning these items as a way to honor and remember the moments that were so influential in their lives and the happy times that made them into who they are today. Along with the nostalgia, there is also a certain sense of timeless appeal for classic toys. The toys made today are not exactly like the ones made 20 plus years ago for different reasons. For this reason, it is the vintage toys that have a unique sense about them that brings nostalgia to millions of people.

Nostalgia also explains why collectors prioritize condition over authenticity in each item. The condition reminds them of the new toys they once had or remember seeing as a child in stores. It leaves a lasting impression and preserves a slice of the era when toys remain in their original packaging in mint condition.

Comfort and Control

Another reason people enjoy toy collecting is that it gives them a sense of comfort and control. Keeping, organizing, and storing a collection allows people to have a sense of control over it and be able to make a collection exactly how they want it.

They can choose specific items to purchase and add to a collection and then organize it in a way that it will be preserved and protected for years to come. These items also are often worth a lot of money and allow for people to get a sense of accomplishment from owning a valuable collection that they chose and purchased.

They can also learn to take care of them and figure out how to get them graded or keep them in pristine condition to continue to grow in value. Many people enjoy having the ability to make a collection their own, be able to collect toys from their childhoods for a sense of comfort and nostalgia, and to have control over the entire collection process.

The "Thrill of the Hunt"

Another reason people collect toys is for the thrill of the hunt. This is a big factor in why people continue to collect after already buying a vintage toy. They get a sense of thrill from searching for so long on an item to finally purchase it and own it.

Especially with vintage toys that are nostalgic to people, they want an item so bad and wish to relive those memories from their childhoods. When they search for it, they search with a desire to gain a piece of their childhood again. Then, they receive the item and want to do it all over again to grow their collection more.

Some people also collect with the “completionist” mindset. They don't simply want a few items from a single toy line. They want all of them and will keep searching until they find every last one. This may take some time and creates a yearning in people to want the other items, so they begin to search far and wide for the special vintage items.

Personalization and Self Expression

Each collection is unique to each individual collector and showcases their personality. Collecting vintage toys is a way many people get to express their personality through the toys they used to love growing up and the ones they still love now.

For many people, a vintage toy collection shows their childhood as well as who they are now. For instance, there are many fans of Star Wars movies and toys. For someone who grew up in the 1970s and 80s, the action figures were possibly a big part of their childhood and owning the same items now not only brings them nostalgia but also shows a piece of their personality as the valuable item sits on display.

Cultural and Historical Value

The next reason we will mention in our blog for why people enjoy collecting vintage toys is that they represent a bit of cultural and historical value as vintage pieces. Vintage toys demonstrate a piece of history as they represent trends of a certain decade, pop culture, advancements in technology, culture, and the way a time shaped the future decades.

Many people think of the 1980s and think of the toys that were released. This is because they were such an integral part of the decade. For example, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mark the end of the decade as the toys were released in 1988. People from this decade remember this time as they played with the toys and watched the cartoons to go along with them.

Today, these toys- along with many other vintage toys- mark a moment in time that brings people back to the whole era, not just memories of them playing with the toys. Seeing these toys even brings back memories of other trends of the decade and other vintage toys from that time period.

Hobby

A lot of collectors enjoy collecting vintage toys simply because it is a hobby for them. Other collectors may want to start a collection more for investing in which we will mention later in this blog. However, having a collection of vintage toys as a hobby relieves a lot of the pressure of needing to keep your items in pristine condition so you don’t lose any of the value.

A hobby is defined as a regular, purposeful activity specifically for leisure or rest to be used for personal satisfaction rather than making money. This is true for a lot of collectors. Though they still care about the condition of an item, they most likely look more for display of an item or even take it out of its box to play with, which would be a crime to someone who invests in valuable vintage toys.

Sense of Community

Another reason people collect toys is for the community that comes with it. Especially during the pandemic, vintage toy collecting spiked tremendously. Part of this was due to nostalgia and wanting to start a collection from home, but a lot of the other portion was from people wanting a community of other like-minded people to talk to.

They connect online through different websites and online auctions. They also connect through different conventions and live showings. This community gives people an outlet and platform to be able to communicate with other enthusiasts and get to know the ins and outs of the vintage toy market.

Through connecting with others, the vintage toy world opens up a bit more. Most long term collectors know certain tips and tricks as well as when the market rises and lowers to be able to assist in the buying and selling process. A community through vintage toy collecting lets people share something in common with others and get to relate in a way others may not be able to.

Financial Investment and High Values

The last reason we will mention for why people collect vintage toys is the financial investment aspect and high values. So many vintage toys reach high values, up to thousands of dollars. They reach these high values due to the market demand from collectors recognizing their rarity, condition, emotional value, and popularity.

Many collectors are willing to spend high amounts of money on collectibles and toys. They will even continue rising the prices over an auctioned toy or one that has a lot of interested buyers due to the demand, making its value even higher.

Along with this, vintage toys and collectibles can act as investments due to how their value comes from emotional value and demand rather than cash value. People use vintage toys to hedge agaisnt inflation and financial distress as they continue to grow in value over the years.

Final Thoughts

There is a big community of collectors throughout the world today who collect for the same reasons. It brings them nostalgia to see their loved childhood toys again. To get to see their favorite toys and grow a collection that is truly theirs which reflects who they are gives a lot of people great joy and satisfaction.

They get to search far and wide and get a thrill from the entire process. There are clearly so many reasons why people collect vintage toys and why they continue to collect for years and even decades. The vintage toy market is still booming with mint finds while collectors keep coming back for more.
