The First Hot Wheels

Mattel introduced the first Hot Wheels on May 18, 1968. Elliot Handler, a co-founder of Mattel, invented them after observing his son playing with Matchbox cars, his future main competitor. Handler decided to create a toy line to compete with Matchbox. They remained the main competitor until 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys, the owner of Matchbox cars. Handler designed the original cars to resemble hot rods, with caricatured features such as big rear tires, flame paint jobs, outlandish proportions, and hood blowers.

Redline Cars

Hot Wheels fans will recognize the name “Redline” as the term applied to cars manufactured within the first ten years of production. Therefore, Redline units were made between 1968-1977. Each car during this period has a red stripe along the wheels, hence the name. The first line of Hot Wheels Cars contained sixteen vehicles. This line was thereby known as The Original Sweet 16.

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout the years, Hot Wheels were primarily collected by children. However, the 1990s saw an adult interest in collecting. Mattel estimates that roughly 41 million children grew up with them, the average collector has upwards of 1,500 cars, and children between 5 and 15 have an average of 41 vehicles. It doesn’t take an expert to determine that Hot Wheels’ impact on the toy industry is undeniably profound. From 1968 to the present, their popularity has only grown, and we can’t see it waning soon! Bio: I am the founder and owner of Wheeljack’s Lab pop Culture and Toy Shop. My vision has always been to reunite customers with their favorite childhood toys and pop culture, triggering fond memories, and reigniting their imaginations. Every day, I work in the “lab” where it’s Christmas 365 days a year. I scour the internet, like when we had the Sears Catalog of yesteryear, for the next great treasure. Then, I await the arrival of the postman as if he were Santa Claus himself and helping collectors worldwide with their versions of Christmas. Every day as a vintage toy buyer is an absolute joy!
