What is a Hobby?

A hobby is typically defined as more casual enjoyment. Rather than for gaining money, a hobby is more for regular activity and interest during leisure time. Though a hobby can bring in some money, that is not the main goal for someone with a hobby.
A hobby is for pleasure, relaxation, and personal enjoyment. Unlike passive consumption, a hobby involves active participation. An active, skill based pursuit that focuses on making, experiencing, or doing something rather than just acquiring items to store.
Also, while the focus on a collection is a bit different, the focus for a hobby is merely on enjoying the items purchased. With a hobby, displaying the toys and playing with them might not be a big deal. A hobbyist's goal is to enjoy them for their intended purpose and not necessarily for financial gain.
What is a Collection?

Next, on our blog, we will mention what a collection is. A collection is where someone has a purposeful pursuit towards specifit items based on expertise or interest. Collectors typically have a very systematic focus as well. This means they no longer randomly buy items, but rather focus on specific items that will add to their collection.
Collections usually include more amounts of items. From this, curation and organization strikes importance with owning a collection. When items are cataloged and organized rather than just sitting on a display shelf, they last longer. Collections typically sore well in totes and many collectors find inventory lists helpful for keeping track of their condition and authentication.
As collectors grow in their knowledge and development from research, their intrest normally grows as well. They begin to focus on quality and are more familiar with the market to see when the best times to buy and sell are. Collectors focus on aquiring the item they are searching for with the reason to add it to their collection.
The Shift from Hobby to Collection

From knowing what distinguishes a hobby and what distinguishes a collection, we will now mention the shift from hobby to collection. First, while a hobby is more active, a collection is passive. This means that while hobbies are more active and include doing art or playing the guitar, a collection is a noun and is passive such as owning 100 collectibles.
Shifting from a hobby to a collection may include going from purchasing what you want to buy to purchasing items with the intention of filling in gaps or complete a set. Though these still may be items someone wishes to purchase, they may be more focused on completion and adding to the items already purchased to finish a collection.
While purchasing items that intrest the individual is a characteristic of both hobbyists and collectors, a collector might look more to what they have in their collection to complete it or make it more valuable rather than purchasing it soley for enjoyment and play.
A collector also most likely doesn't play with or display as freely the items he or she purchases. This is to maintain the value and quality of the items to keep them in the best possible condition. This transition from a hobby to a collection occurs when buying items becomes focused on completeness, appreciation, and value rather than simply pleasure.
Final Thoughts
Though a hobby and collection seem the same, and they have a lot of the same characteristics, most of the time a collection starts from a hobby. A leisurely activity develops into a more focused and purpose-driven collection.
