The term estate does not necessarily mean that the items are old or valuable. It simply means that they had a previous owner. An estate collection is essentially just 2nd hand. Not all of the items are necessarily from the same time period either. In any estate collection, you may have a mix between more modern items as well as older items.

For example, an estate collection of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles items probably includes toys but it may also include masks, stickers, posters, and other collectible items.

Throughout the next section of this blog, we will mention the collection’s condition, rarity, and demand. 

Condition

First up, the condition of each toy plays such a big factor into value. This is because, most of the time, collectors are searching for complete items that don’t show wear or damage. Any damage on items includes tearing of plastic, tape, paper, or cardboard as well as fading color, chipped paint, yellowing on plastic, water damage, stains, missing parts, and broken pieces. 

The highest condition a toy can be in is mint condition in its original sealed packaging. Mint condition means that it shows no wear or damage. When a toy remains in its original sealed packaging, with all parts, and in good condition, the value is at its highest.

From this, it is important to note that however further your toy’s condition is from mint condition, the value will decrease. However, there are two other factors that can still keep low condition items at a high value. These two we will mention next. 

Rarity

The next necessary factor that plays into how much toys are worth is rarity. Rarity plays a huge factor into valuable toys. For instance, if a toy is in mint condition but is mass produced, it won’t reach super high values since it is not rare. However, if you do have a rare item and it remains in good condition, then the value will most likely sky rocket. 

Rarity is often very desirable by toy collectors who are searching for a one of a kind or unique toy. When looking at an entire collection, purchasing every item might be worth it for a toy buyer even if there are only a couple rare items within. 

Because rarity often makes the demand rise, some toys can reach hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Without rarity, even if the condition is good, many toys won’t be worth a lot of money. 

Demand

Lastly, the demand for items is essential. If there is no demand for an item, then it won’t be worth anything. Even if something is in good condition and is rare, if there is no demand for the item then it won’t reach a high value. 

Toy buyers, when looking at a collection to evaluate, look at market trends, current listings, and past listings to determine the current value of each item. Other proponents to why demand rises are popularity and nostalgia. The nostalgia can drive up demand in a way that keeps people collecting toys and raises the value significantly. 

The other proponent, popularity, can drive up demand by simply being well known. For instance, a rare Star Wars toy will be in higher demand than a rare toy that no one knows about simply from popularity. When you get all three: condition, rarity, and demand at the same time- that’s when you get a very valuable item.
