We find our old Barbie dolls with homemade clothing and questionable haircuts, we find our favorite He-Man characters missing their legs, and the LEGO sets we once worked so hard to build broken up into pieces.

While these toys seem priceless to the people whose memories are intertwined with them, many of these toys today actually reach high values with other people searching for them, too. Some old toys are absolutely worthless while others sky rocket in value to amounts you would never even dream of.

While owning an old toy worth thousands of dollars is rare, it is not impossible. You may have a gem just waiting for you in your attic. Attics are typically a place of storage for items people no longer want out or won’t take the time to give away. My Toys Are Old, Does That Mean They Are Valuable?

 First up on our blog, we will be talking about the date of release. While it is true that many old toys are the most valuable, just because a toy is old doesn’t mean it is worth something. There are many other factors that go into if an old toy is valuable- many of which we will mention later on in this blog. However, if you own an old toy from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, it might be worth more than a newer toy. 

The catch is that if the old toy is not in good condition and is not rare, then it is most likely not going to reach a high value. Since the value of old collectible toys is based on the perceived value from a potential buyer rather than the cash value, the date of release on a toy isn't determinative across the board for its value.

Along with this, the condition matters greatly. We will talk more on this later in this blog but if a toy is in really poor condition and is broken, altered in any way, or missing parts then it won’t often be desired by any potential buyer and won’t be worth much of anything. If there is no demand for the item on the market and if it is not rare or in great condition, then it is probably not worth anything even if it’s from the 1970s.

My Toys Remain in Their Boxes, Left Unopened- What is Their Value?

Next up on our blog, we will mention unopened boxes and if those hold high values simply because they are unopened. In most cases, this is true. If an old toy remains in its original packaging then it typically holds a higher value. This is because “old toys” implies that they are at least 20 years old, making them vintage. After 20+ years, not many toys remain in their original packages and are left untouched by time. 

When a child gets a toy, they normally rip it open right away to play with it, leaving it available to damage and losing pieces and accessories along the way. Because of this, when a toy lasts decades in its unopened original packaging and is complete with all parts and accessories, it is very rare. If you have boxes of old toys in your attic, the chances are that you don’t have any toys unopened. 

However, if you do by chance have even just one unopened toy, it might just hold a high value. In the vintage toy market today, collectors mostly search for the toys that are as close to factory sealed condition as possible. This is because they are more nostalgic, in good condition, rare, and can be used as investments. While loose items can also be valuable, the most valuable items are typically those still in factory sealed packaging.

Heat and Humidity

With all of the things that can cause damage to old toys, the main one specifically for an attic is the heat and humidity. There is often no air conditioning in an attic and, while a basement is cool from being underground even though it also may not have much air conditioning, an attic takes on the heat as it rises.

Heat can cause a lot of damage on its own along with fluctuating temperatures, when the attic goes from cold or cool to blazing hot and back down to a cooler temperature. The heat can cause toys made of rubber and plastic to melt or deteriorate.

It can also cause adhesive on tape or bubble packaging to loosen, making once mint toys no longer in mint or sealed condition. This is found especially in the joints of toys made with rubber attachments to help them move or on accessories that break down over time and crack.

Along with this, the packaging on toys is greatly affected by the heat. It can cause packaging to warp and the plastic bubbles or windows on toys to crack and bend easier from the materials breaking down. 

The humidity causes other damage to toys, mixing the heat often with moisture. High humidity can also warp toy packaging as the cardboard toy boxes and cardbacks get damp from the humidity and then mold a different way before drying again. Humidity can also cause more of a sticky residue on loose figures such as wrestlers, He-Man, and other rubber or plastic loose toys. 

It is important to remember these factors about the heat and humidity of many attics while looking through your old toys in the attic to see if they hold any value. Since the condition plays such a high factor into the value, any damage from heat or humidity can severely decrease the value.

A Lack of Correct Storage

Another reason the condition of toys is so important when looking at old toys found in the attic and determining their value is because when items are stored in the attic, there normally isn’t correct storage happening to prevent the damage.

In fact, storing toys in the attic is just overall not correct storage but don’t worry- almost all of us have done the same thing. However, if you have toys stored in your attic, it is still good to note that the storage has a factor into each toy's value. 

If your toys have been stored out in the open on your attic floor or loose in baskets or shelves, they are much more susceptible to damage from humidity, dust, pests, and more. This also goes for toys that are left in the attic in cardboard boxes.

Cardboard boxes can get torn and also undergo damage from humidity and pests. With this, cardboard boxes don’t have sealable lids, they just have flaps. This also makes it a lot easier for pests to get in and for dust to gather on the toys. While correct storage is ideal, toys stored in the attic can still reach high values if they have been protected from damage as best as they can be and remain in good condition.

Unwanted Pests

Another thing that affects the condition of old toys found in attics are pests. Because of the dark, warm, and quiet environment that is typically free from human disturbance, attics are a common spot for rodents and insects to invade. In attics, rodents and bugs are protected from rain, storms, and predators. 

With this, crowded attics become an even more adaptable environment for rodents such as mice, rats, and squirrels along with bugs such as flies, wasps, and ants. In any attic, animals like to hide and make nests in between items.

Especially in crowded attics, it can become difficult to locate these pests as they make their way into your boxes of old loved toys. For old toys, pests can cause a lot of damage.

They can take a once rare and valuable toy and they can tear it up into shreds, break it, poke holes through packaging, and leave a toxic grime all over the toys as they leave droppings or build their webs and nests around the items. It is important to look out for these pests in your attic as they want to build their nests and can cause great damage to your old toys, decreasing their value forever.

Dust Build Up

The last factor we will mention about looking at your old toys’ condition after being in the attic is to look for dust build up. Dust can scratch paint and discolor packaging. When dust is combined with heat and humidity, it creates a sticky layer of grime that is very difficult to get off without damaging the toy or packaging.

Although dust might be the factor that causes the least amount of damage most of the time, it can sometimes simply be wiped off with a microfiber towel and then the toy is just fine. Other times the grime is too thick and it harms the value of the toy. This damage is irreversible as with the other damage caused from the different factors. 

These toys might still be worth something, though, with the dust able to wipe off to reveal a toy remaining in decent condition. You might still have an item that someone is looking for and is willing to pay a high price for.

I Have a Couple of Rare Items But the Rest is Typical, is My Collection Worth Much?

If you are looking through your boxes of old toys and you realize that you have some rare items, your old toy collection might be worth a lot of money simply from these toys. However, if the rare toys end up being worth a lot of money, your other toys could still be worth only a few dollars. 

Just because you own a couple of rare and valuable toys doesn’t mean the other toys go up in value, too. Your toy collection might be split between completely worthless items that no one will purchase because of their condition and a couple of very valuable items that someone wants to add to their collection. 

These rare items, though, need to be in good condition in order to be worth the highest amounts of money. They also need to be in demand from buyers. In most cases, the equation looks like this: Demand X Condition X Rarity = A high valued toy. 

Final Thoughts

Many old toys hold high perceived value from their owners as they are tied with memories and nostalgia from their childhoods. However, while you may see your items as priceless, someone else may disagree. There are many factors that make old toys valuable: rarity, good condition, popular franchise, mint-in-box, and date of release.

However, if a toy has all of these but no demand from collectors, it won’t be worth much of anything. It is important to do research on the specific items in your collection and take all these things mentioned above in mind to see the true value of your toy collection left in the attic.
