The Joy of the Hunt: Why Finding That Missing Piece Matters
Toys spark imagination in children and adults alike. They bring nostalgia and times of simplicity of sweet memories with friends and siblings growing up. Many toys that were released in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s especially hold strong memories with many adults today.
With the cartoon craze of the 1980s that connected many cartoon characters with corresponding toys, the characters came to life in a new way where kids could play with the toys and interact with the characters in a way where, universally, the character’s personality was known.
With these toys, whether they are connected to a cartoon or not, they include accessories that play a significant role in the personality of a character. Who would Captain America be without his shield, or Batman without his cape? Similarly, toy vehicles and playsets include pieces that make the toy what it is.
Without these, the toy doesn’t live up to the same worth or nostalgia. When pieces go missing or a collector searches out for a specific item to complete his collection, the joy of the hunt steps in. Follow along in our blog with us as we begin to dive into the joy of the hunt and why finding that missing piece truly matters.

What is the Joy of the Hunt?
The joy of the hunt plays a huge factor in toy collecting. Most collectors wish to grow their collections filled with complete sets and find every missing piece to complete it. With the rarity of complete sets, it often takes a lot of time and effort to search for the specific pieces needed to complete a collection.
This is where the “thrill of the hunt” or “joy of the hunt” comes from. It is both a thrill and a joy for collectors to search out the items they desire to own and finally find them. It takes work and knowing the right places to look. There are collectors all over the world that may be searching for the same specific pieces you desire to add to your collection.
Because of this, many pieces that are rare become highly desired and even rise in value as they remain harder to find. With this, the thrill of the hunt keeps people searching for every last piece to complete their collection, raise the value of their items, increase rarity, and restore nostalgia.
Why Does Even One Missing Piece Matter?
Next up on our blog, we will mention why even one missing piece matters in just one toy or collectible as well as an entire collection. Join us further as we dive into the market value, historical value, nostalgia, rarity, and affect on grading.
Market Value

Market value matters greatly with vintage toys and collectibles. Because of this, one little missing piece can affect the entire value of an item. On the vintage toy market, items are looked at for their perceived value rather than their cash value and items can rise or lower depending on popularity, quality, and demand. One little small accessory or piece from an item makes a world of difference when it comes to the value.
The same toy that is worth hundreds of dollars complete with all accessories and original packaging might only be worth a fraction of the value if it is missing just one small piece. Completeness in a vintage toy or collectible often shows a higher value and is much more desired by collectors.
For instance, the first image above is a completed 1987 G.I. Joe Defiant Space Shuttle that sold in Februrary of 2025 on our shop for $5,390. Then, the bottom image is the main booster only for the same toy, the 1987 G.I. Joe Defiant Space Shuttle. However, this toy is uncompleted and missing quite a few pieces. It sold for $307.33 in March of 2023.
Historical Value

Vintage toys and collectibles also showcase historical significance and value. They often signify a significant point in time that demonstrated a change in technology or toy advancement. They also can signify a time of cultural change when a new movie drastically held an impact on society. Because of this historical value, even small pieces and parts of a vintage toy or collectible make a big difference.
The historical value changes an item from just another vintage item to one with great significance. Many collectors search out these items and wish to add them to their collections. The desire for them grows greatly and the demand for them continues to rise. From this historical value, small accessories, pieces, and even cardboard packaging all add to the historical value.
The packaging may include key phrases or a design that holds historical significance and the tiny little weapon for an action figure may demonstrate a remarkable time in history. Regardless of the item or accessories, all vintage toys and collectibles hold some kind of historical value as they all mark a point in time where they were released and brought joy and imagination to fans for the first time.
These toys were originally released with all parts for a reason. Each small piece and weapon plays a role into the overall storytelling and characteristics of the toy or collectible. These original parts define the toy as it was originally intended to be played with and experienced. Today, a missing part from these vintage toys still leaves people wishing it was completed.
Nostalgia

Next up, we will mention nostalgia. Nostalgia makes a huge difference when it comes to why a missing piece in a vintage toy or collectible matters. Today, the vintage toy market is booming and that’s primarily from adults who search out their loved toys from their childhoods.
This nostalgia drives them to begin growing a collection or add to an already extensive collection. Especially when someone sees a toy or is reminded of a toy from their childhoods that brings them nostalgia, they often don’t want an incomplete item. Most collectors who buy with the drive of nostalgia see a mint condition complete item and instantly remember their childhood.
With nostalgia, a toy or collectible with a missing piece may not spark the same nostalgia as a mint completed item. A missing piece from any toy matters with the value and, in this case, with the nostalgic and sentimental value as well.
Rarity

Another reason the missing piece in toys matters is from rarity. Since toys are made and designed for play, very few of them remain in their original packages. Most toys are ripped out of their boxes right away to entertain the hearts of children.
Over time, the packaging gets ruined and thrown away, the toy gets worn down, and the pieces go missing. That’s just how it goes and that’s okay. However, because of this fact, it remains incredibly rare to find complete toys in their mint condition. A missing piece always makes a difference.
While the missing piece in a toy may be seen as normal and may still hold a high value, if there’s an item that includes all pieces, that may be seen as incredibly rare and rise the perceived value as the demand also rises.
Grading

Missing packaging or accessories with vintage toys and collectibles greatly harms their value and their ability to get graded. If you are a collector who looks into sending items to a grading company, a missing piece greatly harms this ability. Grading companies professionally assess and evaluate toys in mint condition.
This evaluation gives the toy authentication and security. It remains protected within enclosed custom acrylic casing. Although many collectors wish to get their vintage toys graded, it is not always necessary.
However, many collectors see how it can drive up the value of their vintage toys. Yet, if you don’t have all of the parts or the item still in its sealed packaging then it will not receive a good grade or will not qualify for grading to begin with.
Final Thoughts
A completed collection is always more desired than an incomplete collection. Even the smallest piece matters within a collection, especially if it remains in good condition and is super rare. The difference between a rare completed collection and an incomplete mediocre one is huge.
Through all of this, the joy of the hunt is why so many people continue to collect. Looking for a specific piece keeps the interest strong as it takes months to find just the right piece for a collection. Then, when the piece is found and purchased after looking for so long, the joy and thrill that comes from finally seeing an item or collection completed keeps people collecting for many years.
