Ten Most Expensive Power Rangers Toys

Toei brought forth a team of five super-powered heroes, the Super Sentai, in 1975, aiming to entertain the nation’s youth. The series’ blend of martial arts action, explosions, and giant robot fights made it an immense success. As it led to a franchise in addition to a new genre in Japan, it would take over a decade before it came to America.

Marvel led one of the earliest attempts to bring the Super Sentai over to America, teaming up with Toei. While this partnership spawned the Japanese Spider-Man series, Stan Lee could not locate any channel willing to air the series in America. This left the door open for another company to license Super Sentai.

The man who would bring the franchise to America, Haim Saban, fell in love with Super Sentai during a business trip to Japan. Knowing that there was something special about the series, he secured the rights to localize the series. Even though his first attempt failed to take off, his second attempt made one of the most successful franchises in American entertainment and toys: Power Rangers.

With the support of Fox Kids’ president, Margaret Loesch, Saban Entertainment transformed the Japanese action show with new footage that featured American actors in 1992. The blend of high-school drama, akin to Saved by the Bell, with the action-packed battles became a hit with audiences. Thus, the Power Rangers franchise remains strong over two decades later.

Presenting the Ten Most Expensive Power Rangers Toys that Have Sold on Online Auction Sites

With over two decades worth of toys, collectors often look up their favorite toys from their childhood. Moreover, companies like Bandai have produced extremely limited-edition versions of some toys and high-quality collectibles. While some of these collectibles began with a high entry point, others gained even more value with age.

Understanding the draw of Power Rangers toys, we sought out the ten most expensive toys that have sold at online auction sites. To achieve this purpose, we looked at only listings under the toys, dolls, games, and puzzles category. We also only considered listings for individual toys, not complete collections or lots. To avoid providing false impressions of value, we removed any listings that were suspect and potentially fraudulent. Moreover, we only considered the highest-selling listing for each toy.

10. Bandai Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger DX Dino Megazord

Bandai Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger DX Dino Megazord

In Japan, Bandai has a strong connection to Toei, for they are the official sponsors of the Super Sentai series. This relationship allowed Bandai to play an active role in development, thus they created products that served both as props and toys. They also intimately knew the designs of the robots and monsters used in the series.

The 16th series of the Super Sentai franchise, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, became the foundation for the American series. The theme for this series gave the Rangers machines themed after dragons, dinosaurs, and other prehistoric animals. When the five core Rangers called upon their Zords, audiences knew that the battle was getting serious. There was the Red Ranger’s Tyrannosaurus, the Black Ranger’s Mammoth, the Blue Ranger’s Triceratops, the Yellow Ranger’s Sabretooth Tiger, and the Pink Ranger’s Pteranodon.

These five Zords had a secret, for they could combine into the massive warrior robot, the Megazord. The Triceratops and Tiger became the legs. Meanwhile, the Mammoth formed its arms. Then, the Tyrannosaurs formed the chest and head while the Pteranodon became the back. This robot could also use the Mammoth’s head as a shield and call upon the massive Power Sword.

Bandai included a detailed DX toy of the Dino Megazord within the toys for the 1992 series. This highly detailed toy weighed 2.42 pounds. The box was 43x33x12 cm, indicating a massive toy inside. Similar to the series, the Megazord had both a rolling and standing form. Moreover, players could separate and combine the various Zords.

One of these toys in brand-new condition sold on eBay for $1,800.00 on December 12, 2011.

9.  Bandai Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Legacy Power Morpher Green/White Ranger – Toys’R’Us Exclusive

Bandai Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Legacy Power Morpher Green/White Ranger – Toys’R’Us Exclusive

After over two decades of Power Rangers toys, Bandai knew that the fan base was ready to buy collector’s tier toys. They also understood that Americans wanted to hunt down toys of their favorite entry, which for many was the original that launched the series. Thus, they began to release high-quality recreations of some of the greatest props from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in a Legacy line-up.

One of the key elements of the Power Rangers was their ability to morph from teenagers with attitude into a mighty team of superheroes. Thus, each character received a special emblem, the power morpher, that called upon the powers of the Rangers. Even the ranger that Rita Repulsa created, the Green Ranger, received one of these power morphers.

As one of the most popular characters from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Bandai released the Power Morpher for the Green Ranger in a separate box. This morpher also included the emblem for the White Ranger in this set. Thus, fans could pretend to transform into either era of Ranger. This toy was released as a Toys’R’Us exclusive around 2014. It originally sold for around $59.99.

Years later, this product sold on eBay for $2,200.00 on May 08, 2023. While this item did not feature the autograph of Jason David Frank, the actor of the Green Ranger, it is easily associated with him. Thus, his passing in 2022 may have helped it achieve a high final price.

8. Bandai Power Rangers Dino Super Charge Dino Charge Megazord – Gold Edition

Bandai Power Rangers Dino Super Charge Dino Charge Megazord – Gold Edition

Saban Entertainment introduced the twenty-second new variant of the Power Rangers, Dino Charge, in 2014. Despite a return to a dinosaur theme, the Dino Charge team was a new set of Rangers with new characters and zords. Further distinguishing this series from the 1992 show, there was a completely different set of villains.

Still, the Power Rangers had a Megazords that they would call into battle against giant threats. The Dino Charge Megazord used the Red Ranger’s T-Rex Zord as its main component. This was easily seen with the dinosaur’s head sticking out of its right shoulder. It had a few different forms, but the default was the Tri-Stego Formation, which had the Tricera Zord as the left arm and the Stego Zord as the right. This Megazord also featured forms like the Para-Raptor, Ankylo-Pachy, Para-Stego, and Tri-Ankylo formations that called upon the other Zords.

Bandai decided to release an extremely limited-edition version of this toy to select fans. The only way for them to obtain a Gold Edition was to mail in a flyer and enter into Bandai’s contest. Twenty lucky winners won this toy.

One of these rare toys sold on eBay, where the listing closed at $2,999.99 on December 06, 2016.

7. Bandai Power Rangers Lost Galaxy – Galaxy Megazord – F.A.O. Schwarz 14k Gold Special Edition

Bandai Power Rangers Lost Galaxy - Galaxy Megazord - F.A.O. Schwarz 14k Gold Special Edition

The seventh season of Saban’s Power Rangers franchise, Lost Galaxy, began airing in 1999. This series took footage from Japan’s Seijuu Sentai Gingaman as the basis for the series. So, it introduced a new Ranger Team that set its sights on the stars. Using Quasar Sabers, this team became the Galaxy Power Rangers. Likewise, they summoned Galactazords which combined to become the Galaxy Megazord.

The Red Galaxy Ranger called upon the power of the Lion Galactazord, which would become the Megazord’s head and torso. The Green Galaxy Ranger called upon the Condor Galactazord, which would transform into the Megazord’s waist and back-mounted wings. Then, the Blue Galaxy Ranger was tied to the Gorilla Galactazord which became the hips and waist of the Megazord. Meanwhile, the Yellow Galaxy Ranger could call upon the Wolf Galactazord, which became the left arm. Finally, the Megazord’s right arm was formed from the Pink Ranger’s Wildcat Galactazord.

Similar to a few other rare Megazord releases, Bandai created a special 14k Gold version of the Galaxy Megazord. This toy was only released by F.A.O. Schwarz in an extremely limited quality. There are only around 15 of these toys available.

One of these rare collectibles was made available on eBay. The seller stated that the box was previously opened, but all of the packaging and the toy were in pristine, new condition. Moreover, this was the third copy of the toy that he made available. This listing closed at $3,230.00 on December 22, 2022.

6. Funko Power Rangers Green Ranger Prototype

Funko Power Rangers Green Ranger Prototype

Action figures often go through a design process including multiple prototypes that the sculptors could evaluate and change. Even toys that share a similar body shape, like Funko Pops, go through the prototype process. While some prototypes may have a rough paint job, many remain unpainted. Still, the molds are recognizable and similar to the final product.

While it is uncommon to find prototype toys on the second-hand market, it is not impossible. Sometimes, toy companies allow their designers to keep the prototypes that they worked on. Other times, they are handed out as exclusive gifts. No matter how they are obtained, they become fascinating collectibles that quickly gain momentum in auctions.

One of the prototypes for Funko’s Green Ranger Pop was made available on eBay. Improving its value, it featured the autograph of Brian Mariotti, the CEO of Funko. While this this had no paint and was made of a simple green plastic, its mold closely resembled the final release. Thus, it sold for $3,650.00 on February 11, 2017.

5. Bandai Limited Black Edition Legacy Saba the Talking Tiger Saber with JDF Autograph

Bandai Limited Black Edition Legacy Saba the Talking Tiger Saber with JDF Autograph

In the 2010s, Bandai celebrated the long-running Power Rangers toy line with several re-releases of their famous weapons. The Black Edition Legacy editions presented high-quality replicas of the props and toys from former years. In addition to producing full-size weapons, these toys aimed to be screen-accurate with their details. Some of these weapons, like Saba the Talking Tiger, were released during the 2015 SDCC with only 1000 available.

In the case of the Saba the Talking Saber toy, Bandai included 24k gold accents to the sword. This weapon was used by the White Ranger as both a weapon and a means to summon his Zord. Moreover, the hilt of the sword featured a tiger head, which could voice its opinions and advice to his wielder. This mystic sword could both levitate and fully control the Tigerzord on its own. Thus, it was a worthy weapon and companion to the White Ranger.  Moreover, the weapon would make an excellent focal point in a Power Rangers collection.

One of these limited-edition swords popped up on eBay in 2022. Not only was this sword one of the low-number releases, #0014 out of 1000, but it also featured the signature of Jason David Frank. As Jason David Frank passed away at the age of 49 in November 2022, fans were still mourning his loss. His signature became a major selling point. Thus, the toy sold for $3,999.00 on December 03, 2022.

4. Bandai Denji Sentai Megarenja (Power Rangers in Space) DX Galaxy Mega (Gold Version)

Bandai Denji Sentai Megarenja (Power Rangers in Space) DX Galaxy Mega (Gold Version)

Bandai did not create special gold editions of their toys for only America. Some of these toys were also released for the Japanese market. Bandai released one of these rare special editions within the Denji Sentai Megarenja, the 21st Super Sentai Series, toy line. One of the DX Electromagnetic Fusion Galaxy Mega variations was a special all-gold edition.

American fans would recognize Galaxy Mega as the Astro Megazord from Power Rangers in Space. This gigantic robot warrior was formed through the combination of the Mega Ship and the Mega Shuttle. As with most Megazords, the combined powers of these ships gave the robot an edge in battle. Thus, the Rangers were able to prevail against any foe. It had a wide range of special attacks like the Mega Flying Cutter.

Bandai deemed the DX Galaxy Mega worthy of receiving a special gold edition. Nearly all parts of this robot were tinted in gold. However, the chest remained a translucent red plastic. With few of these editions available, it became a holy grail for some collectors.

One of these toys popped up on eBay a few years ago. Even though the toy was in used condition and the box was in poor shape, it still became worthy of a high ending price. Thus, this toy sold for $4,000.00 on July 11, 2021.

3. Bandai Limited Edition Legacy Dragon Dagger 2014 SDCC Exclusive with JDF Autograph

Bandai Limited Edition Legacy Dragon Dagger 2014 SDCC Exclusive with JDF Autograph

When Bandai set forth to release collector-grade versions of the props from the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers show, they made certain to include the most iconic weapons. As Bandai had helped the Super Sentai production crew develop the weapons, they were well-equipped to create screen-accurate toys. They proved this with the Legacy toy line.

One of the weapons released for the 2014 SDCC was the Dragon Dagger. The Green Ranger famously used this weapon to augment his strength. However, it had an even more crucial element. As the dagger could also be used as a flute, it functioned as the device that summoned the Green Ranger’s iconic Dragonzord. After playing the summoning song, the Zord would rise out of the ocean’s depths to join the battle.

Bandai only produced 1000 copies of the Dragon Dagger for the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. This life-size replica included die-cast metal and 24k gold accents. It also came in a high-quality case.

A lucky buyer was able to locate this toy on eBay in 2022. The copy made available was #0378 out of 1000. More importantly, it featured the autograph of the recently deceased Jason David Frank. This martial artist and actor played the beloved role of Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger. He also frequently returned to the series throughout the years.

This autographed Dragon Dagger sold for $4,999.88 on November 22, 2022.

2. Funko Freddy Funko (as the Black Ranger)

Funko Freddy Funko (as the Black Ranger)

In recent years, few toy companies have licensed as many characters and pop-culture icons as Funko. Their toys include characters from movies, video games, rock bands, sports teams, television, and more. While the company does create action figures and games, its most prominent toy line is Pop!, which features a simple yet versatile design. They also have a mascot that they regularly utilize: Freddy Funko.

As the official mascot for the company, many of Funko’s toys have featured special editions of Freddy. Moreover, the company often releases limited edition versions of this character for fan events and conventions. Freddy Funko has appeared in baseball uniforms, birthday caps, and more. He also often wears costumes that make him resemble famous characters like Pennywise, the Black Power Ranger, and more.

In 2017, Funko released a Pop! toy of Freddy dressed as the Black Ranger from Power Rangers. This toy was made available via a special Funko Fundays offer which ran around the same time as the San Diego Comic-Con. Funko also only produced 24 of these toys to hand out. Thus, it featured a sticker with the SDCC logo and “24 PCS limited edition”.

When this toy appeared on eBay, it sold for $5,500.00 on September 27, 2018. Notably, the official tracker on the Funko app indicates that this toy is worth $6,950.00.

1. Bandai Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger Dragon Buckler (1991)

Bandai Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger Dragon Buckler (1991)

Regularly, some of the oldest toys are the most expensive and valuable ones around. Many toy lines start with a slow trickle, only producing a conservative quantity. Thus, the earliest fans may profit in the future, especially if the toy line has a lasting impact. Aside from the limited availability of toys from the first waves, plastics tend to fail over time. So, it’s rare to find a vintage toy in excellent condition.

In the case of Power Rangers, the Super Sentai toys were popular in Japan well before the series moved to America. While they were readily available in that country, it was rare to import or locate these toys in the West. Thus, fans still love to find toys from the Super Sentai series that spawned Power Rangers: Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger.

As with the American version, the Japanese series used special bucklers to house their transformation power. Not only were these items visually memorable, but they made an excellent role-play toy. Thus, Bandai released Bucklers for all of the show’s Rangers. This included the dragon-themed Green Ranger.

One of the vintage Bandai Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger Dragon Buckler toys appeared on eBay in 2023. The listing closed at $6,100.00 on August 21, 2023, even though the item was opened and lightly used. The seller also noted that the batter tab was still in place and the buckler included the decals.
