From Hobby to Multi-Billion Dollar Industry

Vintage toy collecting has given people the opportunity to grow their small hobby into an incredibly valuable investment. People all around the world collect vintage toys. This sparked tremendously within the past decade and, as more and more people get into buying and selling vintage toys, the demand for them only grows higher.

Because of this, many toys continue to rise in value and become investments. This allows many people to enjoy their favorite toys from childhood by adding them to their collection and watch them grow in value over time as they sit on display or in storage.

Though many people consider vintage toy collecting a hobby, when you place so much money into the items, vintage toys begin to grow into a super high valued market. Because vintage toys don’t follow their cash value but rather their collectible value, the item takes on other factors such as nostalgia and market demand to give it the value.

Advancement in Technology

Within the past 10 years, technology has advanced significantly, thus creating many more opportunities for expanding the vintage toy market. Technology has advanced through the ever-growing world of social media. Toy collectors can now sell items freely through FaceBook marketplace. People also sell and purchase items sometimes through Instagram and other apps.

Toy experts, buyers, sellers, collectors, and curious spectators can find out so much about the vintage toy world just through social media. Since social media is constantly adjusting, making improvements, and growing, it is helping change the vintage toy market as a whole.

Along with this, websites are advancing and increasing in popularity. For instance, eBay grew tremendously into an 8-10 billion dollar industry within the last 10 years which is a hot spot for people to buy and sell vintage toys. People all around the world are able to connect with one another, grow in community, and buy or purchase rare vintage toys.

Adult Collectors With Nostalgia

Many adults start collecting vintage toys because they remember them from their childhoods and desire to own them again. These adults, mainly aged 30-60 are often at a time in their lives where they are able to purchase highly valued items as investments. These same adults are also the ones who owned the toys from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, that are incredibly valuable today.

Collecting these toys reminds adults of the fun and imaginative times from their childhoods where they played with these toys. They get to search the web, find the perfect action figure or playset to purchase, and grow their cherished collections.

Especially during the 1980s, the toy industry sparked a genius marketing strategy that is still used today. The “cartoon craze” of the 80s paired fun action toys with an animated television show to promote the items. From this, many adults today remember those episodes and how they were able to act out the action-packed scenes with their favorite character action figures.

Collectible Appeal

Another way the vintage toy market has shifted in the past 10 years is that vintage toys are highly collectible. One of the main ways vintage toys are seen as collectibles is that most vintage toys are rare. Those toys that released in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, are not in circulation like they once were and are becoming less and less seen - especially those in new, mint, and sealed condition.

The term “vintage” implies that these items are at least 20 years old, if not older. In the last 20 plus years, most of these toys got damaged, broken or lost. Toys are meant to be played with, it is why they were released in the first place. Because of this, few items remain in mint condition in their original packaging.

This is why so many items are seen as collectibles today. They are no longer being produced and are getting harder to find as time goes on. From this, the demand for specific, rare, and high valued items continues to rise. When the demand rises, the value of these items also rises.

High Values and Investment

As mentioned a bit previously, high values and investment have shown so clearly through the vintage toy market in the last 10 years. As more people collect, the demand for these items rises which increases the value. Since so many people desire the items in good condition that have been preserved and cherished for decades, many of these toys have grown to hundreds or even thousands of dollars in value.

Many small action figures, vehicles, and playsets were once purchased for a few dollars but have grown so much in value that they are now worth thousands of dollars. Some items in mint condition get sent to grading companies to receive an authentication of their condition and get sealed in acrylic packaging. This often provides more value due to the preservation and documentation that professionally claims it as a good quality item.

Any high valued toy can act as an investment, and many people choose to do this. They create a collection that can actually withstand factors such as inflation and financial difficulty. As long as vintage toys remain in their condition when purchased, they will most likely grow in value rather than decrease.

For instance, this graded Star Wars Boba Fett action figure above sold for $8,170, making it a perfect investment to add to a collection. As it remains in acrylic, the documentation and professional grading can help it not only stay at a high value but also continue to grow.

Thrill of the Hunt

Another thing that has shifted a bit in the vintage toy market within the last 10 years is the emphasis on the “thrill of the hunt”. This phrase motions toward the many people around the world who are collectors searching far and wide for specific items to add to their collections.

They often have an intended item that they remember from their childhood, is known as rare, or highly valued that a collector wishes to purchase and add to their collection. They will then search far and wide to find that perfect toy. This includes: online websources, auctions, and even live showing events.

When a collector finds the item, the phrase “thrill of the hunt” comes into view. The collector finally locates the best toy to add to their collection. After looking for a long time to find it, the collector is now able to purchase it and receive it. This process is truly thrilling and brings great joy to so many people.

As more and more people collect toys, the “thrill of the hunt” amplifies. More toys become sparse and more collectors search for the same items to add to their collections which drives up the thrill of the hunt and makes items more desirable.

New Releases of Classic Toys

Another factor within the past 10 years that has shifted the vintage toy market is the many new movies, video games, toys, and merchandise that have been released. Some of these are inspired by the classic toys that are now highly valuable.

These new releases of continued franchises from the late 1900s spark people’s interest and get them immersed into the world of vintage toys. Sometimes these are adults who remember the rare vitnage toys and whose memory is sparked again for their love of these items when the new ones release.

For instance, the toy pictured above is a new version, released in 2023, of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures that first released in the 1980s. When new items like this release, it reminds fans of the fun toys that originally released and sparked the imagination that lasted for decades.

Other times, new fans of the franchise look back on the original toys and movies when they get immersed for the first time. Even younger fans who see the new releases begin looking back on the original toys and desire to purchase those as well.

The Pandemic-Era Peak

Possibly one of the most noticeable factors to changing the vintage toy market was the global pandemic, Covid-19. During this time, people all around the world were working from a computer and searching for at-home entertainment.

They began to uncover their old childhood memories by finding their old toys when searching through the attic or basement. Along with this, many people searched the web and got immersed into the vintage toy world. Through being at home, they sourced their entertainment into growing a collection by searching the web and purchasing vintage toys.

Another thing that happened with the peak of the pandemic era is that people all around the world were then able to grow in this community of vintage toy buying and selling. Through searching the web and connecting with others, people who were at home got to be a part of a community of other collectors.

People got to dive deeper into the intriguing world of vintage toys as well as growing a collection that they could admire and take care of while living and working at home. With so many people diving into the world of vintage toys during this time, the growth of the vintage toy market sparked and got many people to continue in toy collecting for future years as well.

The 2026 Shift

The most recent change in the vintage toy market is the shift beginning to take place in 2026. The vintage toy market had multiple years of explosive growth with high valued items and rare mint condition collectibles. From this, the vintage toy market was on the rise and hit its peak.

Now, in 2026, the more common vintage toys are beginning to settle while other high end toys are still on the rise. This also flows with the demand, though, as some other items are still on the rise and sky rocketing in value. Especially during Covid, prices of vintage toys hit a surge from everyone getting into vintage collecting.

However, this shift in 2026 actually makes the perfect time for collectors to get back into the market. This is due to the lower prices of vintage toys so collectors can grow their collections more while items are low and can watch the items continue to increase in value over the years.

Final Thoughts

The vintage toy market has clearly changed and advanced throughout the past 10 years. While more and more people continue to collect and the value of items rises from demand, the vintage toy market has grown tremendously and encaptured the hearts of many.

These toys remind people of their childhoods, simpler times, and fun memories. They allow people to invest, enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and gain a collection of items they truly love. Though there are many changes, one thing has remained the same- people all over the world love vintage toys and enjoy growing a collection.
