How Do I Know if My Father's Toy Collection is Valuable?
Your father spent years collecting his favorite He-Man MOTU figures, Star Wars toys, LEGO sets, and many other toys that he enjoyed. Now, you look at his collection and wonder if there is truly any monetary value to it or if it is only sentimental.
Truth is, the vintage toy market has been booming with toys 20 years and older as many of them reach incredibly high values. Yet, not every toy is worth a lot of money. While the toy market sees high valued items every day that are sold to collectors, many of the items on the vintage toy market are under $50. How can you know if your father’s toy collection is valuable? Stick around and read through our blog today to find out!

While it is true that collectibles, including vintage toys, derive their value from collector demand, there are key factors you can look into to see if a toy is likely to be in demand or not- skyrocketing its value. Stick around in our blog with us to see if your father’s toy collection is valuable.
Original Packaging is Key!

The first factor we will mention is that original packaging with a toy collection is key! Toys that remain in their original packaging are seen as more nostalgic and desired by collectors. When a toy remains in its original packaging, unsealed, it’s like it is unmarked by time.
As close to factory condition as possible is essential with toys. These are ones collectors search for to add to their collections. They are incredibly rare since most toys were opened by children the second their parents brought them home and hardly remain with all pieces, much less complete and in their sealed original packaging.
Original packaging with toys also marks as another source of authenticity. It gives another way for collectors to make sure their toy is original. The designs on a toy box is a way collectors preserve the historical artwork and theme of the franchise that shows so clearly as the toy remains inside the box or bubble packaging.
Original packaging is also essential for keeping the toy in good condition. While some toys do break down over time due to poor materials and harsh heat, keeping toys in their boxes and packaging allows them to be untouched from time.
The toys themselves are freed from rough handling and years of play that normally makes toys lose parts or break. Instead, when a toy remains in its original packaging, the paint stays in good condition and all small accessories stay intact. If you have toys remaining in their original packaging, you may just have something valuable on your hands.
Overall Condition of Loose Figures

Another thing to look for when seeing if your father’s toy collection is valuable is to look at the overall condition of all toys, including both loose figures and packaged toys.
Especially with loose toys, even if your loose action figure includes all accessories and parts, if it’s broken in any way or paint is chipped, it will only be worth a fraction of the value of one in good condition. Since many toys are mass produced and are vintage, many of the toys that remain today are loose toys that show wear.
It is much rarer for toys to last decades in good condition than it is for them to show a bit of wear. Along with this, so many environmental factors play into why toys don’t often remain in mint condition. This includes extreme heat, humidity, direct sunlight, pests, rough handling, heavy objects crushing or warping, and water. All of these cause damage to toys and are very common.
Because of this, toys that remain in good condition are highly desired by collectors and rise to much higher prices. While the toys in good condition in their original packages rise to the highest values, loose toys in good condition can also reach significant values.
The Older, The Better... Sometimes

Older toys are often made with different materials and technology that aren’t used today. Likewise, if the toy is older, in good condition, and is rare, it will sell for a high price. However, just because a toy is old doesn’t necessarily mean it is worth a lot of money.
For instance, the older Hot Wheels from the 1970s were made with a diecast metal but the more modern Hot Wheels are made from plastic. Another example is the 1982 G.I. Joe figures that had more limited articulation in the arms before the swivel arm released with the figures in 1983 and allowed for much more articulation.
This makes the earlier versions from 1982 high in value, especially those that remain mint-on-card. Sometimes loose toys can spark high values as well but oftentimes the loose items are worth a small fraction of mint items even if they are decades old unless they show rarity and high condition.
Completeness is Essential

Incomplete toys decrease in value significantly. If you want to see if your father’s toy collection is valuable, check to see if the toys are complete or if they are missing parts.
This step might take some research if you don’t know what all needs to be included for a toy to be complete. Even for small 3.75 inch Star Wars action figures, if there is a small little gun or other accessory that is missing, it can significantly decrease the value.
Accessories give personality and more play opportunities to a character. For vehicles and playsets, the same principle applies. These seemingly insignificant tiny parts actually hold a lot of value as they add to the toy as a whole.
Collectors don’t typically want incomplete toys unless they just so happen to have the missing part themselves without the rest of the toy. This is not common and many collectors desire the complete toy with all parts and accessories.
If you have a collection of toys that aren’t complete, chances are that they won’t be worth much of anything. However, if you have a collection full of complete toys, you may have a gold mine of a collection in your hands that is worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
Brand or Manufacturer Can Show a Hidden Gem

Check the stamp, usually on the bottom, back, or base of a toy, for the manufacturer. This will help check for authenticity and be able to tell you the date of release. Certain brands and manufacturers are well known for their popular toys and high quality materials that last. Others are known for breaking down easily and not being high in demand.
This stamp of the brand or manufacturer will ensure you know for sure what toy is in your father’s collection. Since many smaller toy companies make bootlegs or fake figures and toys of popular items, having the manufacturing stamp to look at will make you confident that you have the original and can look further into the value and other aspects from the manufacturer stamp.
The manufacturer stamp often also includes the country of origin such as “Made in China”, “Made in Mexico”, or “Made in the USA”. These are also great indicators for authenticity. A missing manufacturing stamp is a red flag and often indicates a fake or bootleg toy. If a toy was popular or expensive, there’s a good chance that counterfeits exist.
Rarity Sparks Demand

Items that are produced in limited quantities or are no longer in production hold higher prices within the toy market. While there are rare toys that are not high in value simply because no one wants them, rarity also often sparks demand. When toys are rare, people want them. They desire to own a one-of-a-kind item.
When there is a high demand for a rare item, the value sky rockets. This is because there are not enough items to meet the demand. People are willing to pay high prices for items that are rare since they most likely won’t have another opportunity to purchase that exact item or even one similar.
Sometimes, toy companies lack initial popularity or go bankrupt and only release a small number of toys. Some short run toy lines don’t hit initial popularity so they stop production after only a year or two.
While these toys may not have hit popularity at the time of their release, sometimes they become high in demand a few years or decades later. These become high in demand due to their rarity and uniqueness that the mass produced toy lines don’t have. If you have a rare and unique toy, you might have something that is very valuable and high in demand.
