The first thing that is important to keep in mind when looking at your toys’ value is to know that each and every collection is unique. Each collection contains different items that may hold value and each collection contains items of different conditions and quality. Even if there are two collections that have the same item, the chances are that the condition will be even a little bit different which will affect the value. 

Since old toys have so many different variables that affect how they look, are played with, collected, and are worth, it is true that no collection is exactly the same. Collectors also purchase things that attract them, that are nostalgic, or are a solid investment. This is another reason why no two collections are exactly the same. Every toy collection’s worth is based on factors such as condition, rarity, release date, nostalgia, sentimental value, specific variations, and demand.

How Old Do Toys Need to be to Hold Value?

Another aspect to consider is how old your toys are. You can check the date of release by looking at the manufacturer stamp or date stamp on the bottom or back of the toy. Typically, this will show the year of release and will help you to know how old it is along with the information needed to know if it is an original or a more modern release. 

Sometimes, toy companies release a more modern version of a vintage toy when a new movie comes out or as an attempt to reboot the franchise. Because of this, the more modern toys can get mistaken for the vintage items and aren’t high in value and are typically in much better condition than those that were first released decades ago. 

Vintage toys reach the highest values, generally speaking, on the toy market today. Vintage toys are toys that were released over 20 years ago. Today, many of the highest valued vintage toys were released in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. 

Antique toys, then, are toys that were released over 100 years ago. People have been playing with toys for centuries. While many old toys are more valuable than modern toys, a toy is not deemed valuable simply because it is old.

There is no set date or period of time that you can look at to see if your toy will be worth value. However, you can look at the date and know that if it is decades old and still in good condition, then it might be worth something.

Condition

The next thing that helps determine how valuable your old toys are is the condition. Condition is incredibly important when it comes to the value. There are many different things that impact a toy, leaving it in mint, sealed, carded, boxed, loose, or complete condition. 

Many environmental factors such as sunlight, flooding, humidity, temperature changes, and natural disasters affect a toys’ condition. UV rays from sunlight and harsh LED lighting can cause plastic on toys to yellow and become brittle over time. It also makes rubber connectors and parts crack and become very fragile. 

Water can cause great damage to toys as it makes paint chip, metal rust, cardboard and paper warp, and coloring fade. Humidity and temperature changes can cause a lot of the same damage as flooding, making items fragile and warped. Along with flooding, any other kind of natural disaster can take your toys from you or severely harm their condition. 

With millions of toy collectors around the world, the toy market continues to grow with new collectible items. Because of this, collectors are not searching for the typical, worn, and played with items. Most collectors desire the pristine, mint, complete items that remind them of their childhoods.

It is easy to find old toys that are worn, broken, and missing pieces but it is a lot harder and more exciting to find old toys that are in perfect or close to factory condition. These are the toys that reach the highest values.

Quality

Another thing that is important when looking at the value of old toys is the quality of them. Certain old individual toys and toy brands have a reputation of lasting a long time and having great quality. Other individual toys and toy brands have the opposite reputation and are known for breaking easily. 

Another example of how quality and materials affect the value is when toy companies switch the materials and design partially through production or over time. For instance, Hot Wheels were made with diecast metal at the time of their release in 1968.

Then, in the late 1970s to early 1980s, the metal baseplates changed to plastic to cut costs and maintain a low retail price. While Hot Wheels have still grown in popularity and continue to release even decades later, those original metal vehicles are the highest of quality and are the ones collectors search out the most and pay high prices for. 

Along with this, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is another example of this. They changed the material of the heads on their action figures. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, Playmates transitioned their soft PVC material heads to hard plastic. Many of these material changes cause prices to sky-rocket for collectors when they remain in their original packaging and in good condition.

Supply and Demand

Next up we will talk about supply and demand. When it comes to the value of your old toys, the demand of an item is really the one overall determining factor. However, supply and demand also go hand in hand and any of the other factors mentioned previously play into whether or not an item is high in demand or not. 

Similarly, rarity holds value and can drive up demand greatly but rarity means nothing if no one wants the rare items and if there is no demand. The harder an item is to get, the more money a person will typically pay which is why all of the other factors matter, too. If there are thousands of the same vintage toy still left in existence but only a small handful of them are in pristine condition, then those few items will most likely sky rocket in value. 

Another factor is popularity. Popularity drives up demand. If no one knows about the item, it won’t be high in demand. Main characters are also more popular than a secondary character or one that is more modern and later introduced.

Popularity can also stem from nostalgia which drives up demand by many collectors. They are searching for specific items they remember playing with when they were a child and now desire to own again as it holds high sentimental value and now high monetary value as well. 

Certain brands such as Mattel and Hasbro hold high respect and popularity for many collectors. Along with this, certain franchises such as LEGO, Star Wars, Transformers, and many more can also drive up nostalgia and demand which leads to people paying higher amounts of money for these items. Since the value of old toys is not based on cash value, the demand from buyers and their willingness to pay is what determines any old toy’s value.

In a more practical sense, a solid way to find out if your old toys are valuable is to check vintage toy pricing guides. This will help you determine the price someone is actually willing to pay for your item. 

Another great source to check the price you might sell for is to look on eBay’s sold listings. To do this, you can look up any item you have and scroll down on the left hand side to filter to only sold items. This will give you a picture of what people have actually spent for the item rather than the inflated or deflated listings on the website.
