1988 Coleco Toy Fair Catalog – Page 50 – Starcom

Explore the pages of the rare 1988 Coleco Toy Fair Catalog with our high-definition scans. Sadly, Coleco closed its doors in 1989. So, this was one of the final catalogs that they ever handed out to dealers, vendors, and other trade professionals. Even though this was one of Coleco’s final Toy Fair Catalogs, it still had treasures to find. For instance, it featured the exciting Starcom line of action figures and vehicles.

Coleco featured the Starcom toy line, which the company introduced in 1987, within the pages of the 1988 Toy Fair Catalog. In the 21st century, the heroic men of Starcom fought for freedom against the evil Shadow Force. This action-packed range of space-age toys combined today’s technology’s wonders with tomorrow’s futuristic designs. Each vehicle featured Power Deploy action, Motorized and Spring-Action operations that moved by themselves at the touch of a button. Meanwhile, the action figures featured Magna Lock using the power of magnets that allowed them to defy gravity.

Page 50 of the 1988 Coleco Toy Fair Catalog presented information on 1338, the Starcom Small Air Vehicle Assortment. This assortment included these Starcom vehicles: 1336 Shadow Spy, 1334 Tornado Gunship, and 1335 Sidewinder. Each vehicle had a Magna Lock Power Deploy that changed it from transport mode to battle-ready status. Moreover, all land and air vehicles had either a rotating laser cannon or elevating weapons.

Coleco next advertised 1336, Shadow Spy, the disguised enemy fighter. This vehicle was disguised to look like a Starcom vehicle of friendly forces. So, the sinister Shadow Spy could instantly deploy into a lethal fighter of Starmada, the Shadow Force’s mighty air and space fleet. It came equipped with a Magna Lock panel to lock onto Starcom vehicles.

Then, they presented 1334, the Tornado Gunship, the air/space transcopter. Essential for low-level ferrying of troops to battle zones, the Tornado Gunship changed from transport to attack air vehicle. In its battle mode, it opened to deploy cannons, a cockpit, and a troop compartment.

Finally, Coleco promoted 1335, Sidewinder, the high-speed jackknife fighter. Sidewinder was the incredibly fast and versatile mini jet of Star Wing, Starcom’s powerful air and space fleet. The Motorized Power Deploy changed it from Transport Mode to Fighter Mode, deploying the fuselage, wings, cannon turret, and pilot cockpit.

About Our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Coleco handed out catalogs to toy fair and other event attendees like dealers and retailers. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they were often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Thus, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Coleco Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the Sectaurs, who combined insects with superheroes, appeared in multiple catalogs. Likewise, Coleco produced and promoted the Rambo toy line, which focused on the cartoon series. There were also many vehicles and toys from the Starcom toy line.

Coleco used in-production prototypes in their images as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only in these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Coleco only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Coleco Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
