Page 145 of the 1987 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog presented information on G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero action figures and playsets. At the beginning of the decade, the G.I. Joe toy line was effectively a dead franchise, for Hasbro had temporarily shelved the line. However, with the persistence of an executive and the assistance of Marvel, G.I. Joe received a facelift to become Real American Heroes. With both comics and a cartoon show supporting the line, it became one of Hasbro’s greatest hits during the decade.

This 1987 Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog page promoted #6002, the Deviant – Space Vehicle Launch Complex, which was functionally three playsets in one. With the Defiant, G.I. Joe blasted off to battle Cobra for control of the “high frontier”. It featured incredible styling, realistic details, and lots of ‘hand-on-play’ that combined to form the most spectacular G.I. Joe playset ever. This playset included the G.I. Joe astronaut, PAYLOAD, and the Crawler driver, HARDTOP, with personal combat command files.

Then, Crawler with Gantry was heavily armed with 11 positionable gun turrets, 3 control rooms, a swivel console seat, 2 opening windshields, a scanner with scope, and a repair station. It also featured 2 working elevators, a cooling system, a blast shield, and bogie wheels. Moreover, the crawler alone had room for 25 figures.

The Battle/Space Station was the shuttle’s boosters that were converted into a space station. This station featured work areas, an opening cockpit, four console seats with computer screens, a 3-level workstation with a wall ladder, and a sleeping compartment. It also had two positionable chairs, four positionable guns, four rockets, a wall locker, a revolving door for Defiant entry, a sliding Deviant hatch module, and a docking hatch. Moreover, it had room for 15 figures.

Finally, the Defiant featured a cockpit, three cockpit chairs, two movable consoles, three positionable laser cannons, landing gear, a positionable gripper arm extension, an umbilical cord, and a manned maneuvering unit (MMU) backpack.

About Our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans

To promote their upcoming slate of products, Hasbro handed out catalogs to attendees of toy fairs and other events. Each catalog was filled with information about their newest toys, even ones still in development. Thus, they often provided the first looks at action figures, playsets, vehicles, and more from their lines. Therefore, they have become valuable and rare collector’s items.

These Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogs featured toys from their beloved lines. For instance, the company was responsible for one of the most popular action figures of all time: G.I. Joe. They also partnered with Takara to bring the Transformers to the Western market. The company also dipped into the fantastical worlds of Air Raiders, Inhumanoids, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. After Hasbro acquired Kenner, they also became the home of toy lines like Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Hasbro used in-production prototypes in their images, as these catalogs were prepared before the lines were released. This meant that the featured toys often differed from the retail releases. Moreover, toys sometimes appeared only on these catalog pages, as they were canceled or never hit retail store shelves.

While Hasbro only handed these booklets out to trade professionals, we have now made them available to all. You can explore the toys featured in these catalogs with our Hasbro Toy Fair Catalog Scans. This is a rare treat since catalogs like these have become increasingly difficult to locate with each passing year.
